Andrew Herbert (Edsac Replica Project & University College London)

Andrew Herbert was until September 2011 the Chairman of Microsoft Research Europe. Prior to becoming Chairman he had been the Managing Director of the Microsoft Research Lab in Cambridge, England. He started his career as an academic at Cambridge University working alongside such famous figures as M.V. Wilkes, D.J. Wheeler and R.M.Needham on important early developments in computer architecture, operating systems and networks. He then moved to industry creating a succession of successful entrepreneurial software
companies which ultimately were acquired by Citrix, for whom he worked as Director of Advanced Technology prior to joining Microsoft in 2001. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2010 and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
